I’m not sure spending three hours this morning hiking through a stream was the smartest way to finish my training for the week, but it sure was fun. Thankfully, the first round of the big summer project will be printed Sunday and I won’t be stressing over it 24-7.

In the mean time, my cable internet at home is broken (thanks Comcast!) so I’m only able make plans and such from work. It’s going on a 10 hour day and it’s only about 4:30pm.

That said, I’ve been thinking a lot about motivation while running. I find that I can visualize myself running much harder than I allow myself to do. Part of that is because I really am afraid of hurting myself. But the other part of me feels like I should save some energy for the last few yards down the finish line.

Screw that. The 3Sports race is a fast course and I’m expecting to finish under two hours. I know the bike will be fast and I know the swim will be really fast. That leaves the run. And dammit, I’m gonna get that run under 45 minutes this time if it kills me.

OK, I hope it won’t kill me, but this time I’m trying something different: going full out the entire time, especially on the run. No holding back.

I can do this. I know I can. And it’s also time to stop being afraid of running. As long as I’m cautious in terms of form and intensity, there’s absolutely no good reason I don’t allow myself to run full out.

And when I get back from Richmond and I recover, I hope to start a new training plan — of, you know, actually doing that hour+ a day I keep promising myself (and only do every other day.)

Kiley has the cutest inspiration ever! I'm speaking of her beautiful daughter. I admire anyone who can manage to do any kind of craft while entertaining, raising, feeding a child. I don't have any children...well, I have a husband and a cat and those are hard enough to manage. Cherry Blossoms Design offers wonderfully delicate and beautiful hair accessories for little girls. Here's Kiley's interview:

What is your craft?
My craft is making beautiful & unique headbands (and other hair accessories) for infants, toddlers, and children.

How did you get started?
I established Cherry Blossoms in 2006 when my baby girl was born. I wanted high quality unique hair accessories that were both beautiful and functional and was unable to find any, so I began making my own. Compliments and inquiries from friends and family followed and after many requests, I decided it was time to make the big jump and begin selling my products.

Hobbyisit or Artisan?
I would have to say both. I believe it started out as a bit of a hobby but it has blossomed into something bigger. Doing this as a full time career plus being a mother and wife takes most of my energy. Not only am I making each item by hand I also am designing them, advertising them, and making sure they are comfortable and look adorable on delicate little heads!

What or who has influenced your art the most?
My daughter, she is my inspiration and My husband, he is my support.

Where do most of your sales come from?
Well I have only been a member of Etsy since the middle of May...I have had one sale so far and that was from a customer in the United Kingdom. I am working on some new designs to hopefully get online this month or next!

Do you have a mantra or any tips for other artisans?
Advertise! Advertise! Advertise! Word of mouth is pretty powerful. Also make a product you like making and that you are proud to sell!

What is your craft?
I am primarily a painter and have shown in various galleries around New York. But I love handmade things and enjoy bookbinding, printmaking, jewelry, puppets and other hands on project I make up. As long as people enjoy the things I make, it makes me very happy.

How did you get started?
When I was in high school I worked for a Jewelry Store In Copenhagen, Denmark. The Woman who owned the store was great, she set me up doing repair work, alterations and custom work. From there I started my own Jewelry line that sold in small boutiques and craft markets.

Artist for life.
I love the arts. I graduated from Pratt Institute with a degree in Fine Arts, where I majored in painting

What or who has influenced your art the most?
Studying art history keeps me informed, humble and motivated.
I study all the masters living and dead. It’s a long list (so I’m not sure if you want to post that) my mom was good enough to take me to a lot of museums, shows, and the theater growing up.

Where do most of your sales come from?
Most sales come from recommendations from friends. And also people I meet at galleries and craft-shows around town.

Do you have a mantra or any tips for other artisans?
Stay committed and don’t get discouraged. The world today does not support the arts. The truth is that most art today whether it is dance, fine art, craft, theater is supported by the artists themselves. Some days I just what to give up. But then I think back to the short time I had a regular job, and the truth is, crating art is the best thing I know of.

I've gotten a few comments that I should draw women with short hair. I personally prefer long hair on women. I like seeing it and I like drawing it. I don't have too many drawings of women with short hair. If I do, it's because it fits a specific character, or I couldn't think of an interesting long style to draw.

Tracey is a crafter in the true sense of the the word. She's got her hand in everything from jewelry to photography, knitting to card making. Like many crafters she wants to do it all, and she does! Here's her interview:

My main craft is jewelry design. But I also do many, many others. I'm a craft-aholic, I guess you can say *laugh* I also make cards, soaps, home-made remedies using essential oils and other things, decopauge and I make different items with polymer clay- including pendants and charms. I am soon going to be launching the Doe-Doe Dilly Bird line :) I also love photography and offer both matted and unmatted photos- some are digitally enhanced, but most are not. I am also working on something new, which I am VERY excited about. It's an invention that everyone (most who love electronics) will be able to use. I sent off for an inventor's kit for it *lol* Patent may be pending soon- not sure, it's so expensive! But it'll be making it's debut soon!!

I got started in crafts, in general, several years ago when I was in my early 20's. Hubby and I was in Wal-Mart and I saw a needlepoint kit I really loved. I told hubby I wanted it and he said, "You haven't ever done anything like that. You're not the crafty type. You can't do that." WRONG WORDS! Don't ever tell me I can't do something! So, of course I bought it and the rest is history. One thing lead to another. My sister is the one who got me into jewelry design. I kept telling her that I wasn't going to get into it, that I didn't need another hobby. But since I'm a rock, crystal and gem collector- it too seemed to be just a natural escalation.

I'm both a hobbyist and artisan. In my jewelry, I'm definitely an artisan. I call myself a Jewelry Artisan and Craftsman.

I'm not really sure anyone has influenced me the most. I'm a lover of all arts and appreciate all different styles and mediums, even if it is not my taste or forte. I respect all who do their art well and take it seriously. I find beauty in all things handcrafted and still find myself in 'awe' at the many wonderful things people create.
If I had to pick one person, I'd have to say, God. Seriously, when I look around at our earth and even in my backyard, early in the morning at just the pure beauty of the colors around, beneath and above me- I'm always amazed. And I always say, "Wow, God, you're an awesome craftsman!" or "Wow, what awesome craftsmanship!" *smiles*

To others I'd say, try not to get too disappointed when sales are down. (And I try to take my own advice) try to remember the reason you do your craft in the first place. We all do our craft(s) because we love making things with our own hands. It's a stress-reducer. We do it because it makes us happy and content while we are creating and proud of our achievement once it's completed. Now that we are selling our work, it can sometimes have the exact opposite effect than the whole initial reason for beginning our craft. Don't let the business side take the joy and peace away from you. Sometimes, we need to step back, take a deep breath and put things into perspective.

I am always intrigued by the male species of the craft world. They usually have a very interesting and different perspective when it comes to design. Choctaw's designs have quite a range from simple to intricate and Native American to modern. He has some wonderful creations and interesting influences. My most favorite it the armadilla ring, entitled Armando Armadillo.

Here's his interview (R.J.'s, that is, not Armando Armadillo):

I'm from the ghetto,homie. I was raised on bread & baloney. Never mind. I thought I was at open mike night at Rick's Flat Cat Bar & Grill.

I'm R.J. of www.choctaw.etsy.com and I'm addicted to silversmithing. It started out simply enough. I had just bought the single best men's sterling silver ring on earth at the time. It cost $175.00 back in the day. It was made of opal ,coral and turquoise. It had so much intricate work in it that it still amazes me.
I returned to purchase a sterling buckle and bracelet when it dawned on me that I could teach myself smithing if I bought the tools instead.

I began making gifts for Indian friends for birthdays. In months, orders began pouring in. I began doing shows and then opened a shop in a steel building because I am allergic to brick & mortar.

I kind of do my own thing. I don't feel limited to making only native american style jewelry just because I am one.

I am very deeply influenced by my dreams at night. I see all kinds of images and sketch them upon awakening. I am also influenced by late 1800's Choctaw jewelry seldom seen outside of local homes or museums.

Nature itself teaches me great lessons in design as well as in living.I am surrounded by wildlife as I live on 2 acres in the woods.
My philosophy is to try to create something beautiful everyday.
That makes me very happy.
A few tips to others might be to strive to be your very best at your craft. I am self-taught but you don't have to be. Use only the best materials available. Make things that will last. Pour your heart into it.
I still take custom orders,especially for rings. It thrills me to hear how happy someone is to wear it.

I went to college origionally for animation...a crafts course was required to graduate and luckily I took that early on...I chose jewelry fabrication and fell in love...so I switched majors...got my BFA in metalsmithing...and now here I am....

Definitely not a hobby...though I would do this for the rest of my life even if I didn't make any money...I just love creating unique pieces....

What or who has influenced your art the most?
I really don't have a lot of influence...to be honest I don't even really look at a lot of other jewelers work...I guess what drives me is to create something different...with my pieces...no two are alike...so I try to keep that going...

Where do most of your sales come from?
I make sales on etsy...and I get a lot of custom requests from friends and family...

Do you have a mantra or any tips for other artisans?
I would tell people to continue doing what drives you and makes you happy...never give up or feel defeated...there are a lot of people out there doing the same work...but you have to believe in yours...

1. What is your craft?
My craft is paper goods, mostly cards.

2. How did you get started?
When I was planning my wedding I looked into wedding invitations online and saw how much they cost for so little detail. I thought to myself, "I can make these" and I had a blast making them. Now I take that same creative drive to make cards and other paper goods.

3. Hobbyist or artisan?
Mainly a hobbist. In the near future I would like to make my little venture legal and get my business license.

4. What or who has influenced your art the most?
Well, my mother-in-law. She is very crafty and give me great inspiration to continue my craft. Also my fellow etsy crafters. There is nowhere else in the world where you can get encouragement and enjoyment out of a group of people.

5. Where do most of your sales come from?
Mainly from Etsy buyers but some are from local buyers in my town.

6. Do you have a mantra or any tips for other artisans?
I love my hobby and though I have had many people tell me that my cards are amazing, there are still people who think what I do is silly. Know that whatever you do, do it from the heart. Love it with all your soul no matter what other people think. It might be hard in the begining but if you keep at it your dreams will come true. I know it sounds silly but it just might be true.

This crafty crafter Natorious has quite a talent in many different crafts. It's always exciting and admirable to me when people have the ability to create with all different kinds of mediums. Here's her interview:

What is your craft?
I make all sorts of things. Truly. I've painted and drawn for as long as I could hold a pencil. I started sewing when I was very young, and mastered the sewing machine by 10 to make clothes for my toys. I learned to knit about a million times, but finally remembered how in university. So my craft is whatever I feel like making at the time, and this ranges from acrylic folkart paintings, to beaded jewelry, to clothing, to bags, to cat toys (I have a cat), and plush toys and things people ask me to make for them!

How did you get started?
Oops, I guess I started answering that question already. I need to keep my hands busy doing something almost all the time, otherwise I go crazy. So this rapidly turned into me multi-tasking: making something while participating in a conversation, sitting in class, watching a movie, travelling, etc. Eventually this turned into my spending money on materials that turned into toys and other things that I either gave away to charity, friends, or let accumulate in my home. Then I found Etsy!

Hobbyist or artisan?
Hobbyist for sure. I teach geology at a community college as my "day job" - and while I love making all the things I make, I really only will (if I'm lucky) make enough to restock materials!

What or who has influenced your art the most?
My surroundings. As a geologist I love love love going out into the great outdoors to explore and nerd out looking at rocks. So, when I find beautiful rocks I like to turn them into jewelry. When I see colour combinations in nature I like to replicate them also - I'm really into earth tones and warm colours, so often fabrics I use and colours I put together are inspired by the mountains or sunsets.
Otherwise, watching my cat do cat-like things certainly helps come up with an idea or two - especially for toys!

Where do most of your sales come from?
Well, I haven't been on Etsy for long, but the most I've sold has definitely been cat related. Actually, before being on Etsy, most of the items I was asked to make were for cats (my hand knit mice are popular - although none have sold on Etsy yet!). I'm still getting a feel for what will sell when I get my name out in the big wide world of Etsy!

Do you have a mantra or any tips for other artisans?
Hmmm... well, what I do is make what I love! And I have fun doing it. I'm putting love and good karma into my items, and I hope that the buyer of them will love their purchase, bringing that happy good karma back around! Not much of a tip, but it's certainly a mantra!

At a local store I found they carried Dickies pants in plus sizes! Yes, you read correctly, Dickies! Because I'm a bargain hunter, I didn't buy them immediately after I tried them on(it was so hard not to.) So I went home and looked online to see if I could find them cheaper somewhere else. I had NO success finding them at all. Although, I did find that at dickiesgirl.com they have a whole plus size line coming soon. So I signed up for their mailing list in hopes that they'll come out with it soon!
The pants are low rise stretch and they have one, what they call a welt pocket on the back. There are no pleats in the front and they have straight legs. Of course they're too long for me as all pants are so i'll have to have them altered, but I'm extremely happy with my purchase and I wanted to share this wit y'all. Unfortunately, I was unable to find these anywhere online so I'm not sure how the local store found them, but be patient and hopefully they'll come to a store near you soon or at least come to the website soon!

I was saddened by the results of the voting on American Idol on Thursday night. I still can't believe it. To me, talent wise, she is one of the most memorable performers on the show. I definately know we have not seen the last of her! I mean, if Elliot Yamin can make it, Melinda Doolittle can. I must say I really think that the wardrobe they had her in the last few weeks was absolutely hideous and wouldn't doubt that might have factored in to people's voting. But who knows. I can't wait till her CD comes out. And now she doesn't have to wait until her contract is up with Idol to sign a real contract!

He knows that he is an unlikely champion for the size-acceptance movement; body image is a topic he never really thought about before. But for the last eight years, Mr. Nimoy, who is 76 and an established photographer, has been snapping pictures of plus-size women in all their naked glory.

He has a show of photographs of obese women on view at the R. Michelson Galleries in Northampton, Mass., through June; a larger show at the gallery is scheduled to coincide with the November publication of his book on the subject, “The Full Body Project,” from Five Ties Publishing. The Louis Stern Fine Arts gallery in Los Angeles and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston have acquired a few images from the project. A few hang at the Bonni Benrubi Gallery in New York. (Their explicitness prevents the images from being reprinted here.)

These women are not hiding beneath muumuus or waving from the bottom of the Grand Canyon à la Carnie Wilson in early Wilson Phillips videos. They are fleshy and proud, celebrating their girth, reveling in it. It is, Mr. Nimoy says, a direct response to the pressure women face to conform to a Size 2.

“The average American woman, according to articles I’ve read, weighs 25 percent more than the models who are showing the clothes they are being sold,” Mr. Nimoy said. “So, most women will not be able to look like those models. But they’re being presented with clothes, cosmetics, surgery, diet pills, diet programs, therapy, with the idea that they can aspire to look like those people. It’s a big, big industry. Billions of dollars. And the cruelest part of it is that these women are being told, ‘You don’t look right.’ ”

Mr. Nimoy, who divides his time among homes in New York and Los Angeles and on Lake Tahoe, in California, admits that before he began this project, it had never occurred to him that beauty might be culture driven, that a fat body in Africa is treated quite differently from one in the United States. “In some cultures their weight is a sign of affluence: their husbands can afford to feed them well,” he noted.

I just posted these Lagoon Chandelier Earrings on Etsy. I don't usually make vintage-looking jewelry, but lately I've been trying my hand at it since it seems to be very popular on Etsy.
I'm not sure what I would call my own style, but I guess I just try to make things that are in style or that go with things that are in style, so that my jewelry is more marketable. It's such a dilemma that I experience on an ongoing basis. Does anyone else experience this? On the other hand I also try to make things that are, what I think, very unique. This is also to try to raise marketability. Hence my dilemma. Any comments?

Today I have been tagged by FELTLAND. Just yesturday I was reading someone's blog who'd been tagged and I thought, "Ooh! Ooh! Pick me! Pick me!" (waving my hand in the air, arm nearly stretched out of its socket). And today I was tagged. I must have mental telepathy over the blogger waves. But it could work you never know.

Anyway, so I guess I'm supposed to tell seven things about myself that no one knows and then tag seven people. I don't think I even have that many people in my blog roll!

1. I like to listen to Justin Timberlake. So I guess you could call me a "Fan-a-lake" (I just made that up.)
2. I really hate working out. You're supposed to wear tight clothes and well, look my clothes are already tight!
3. I live next to a nursing home but elderly people scare me. I have to sneek off to work before daylight when they put their hearing aids in and peer out their windows to see who's there.
4. I like to break wind when nobody's looking.
5. The idea of S&M and bondage intrigues me but I really don't like pain.
6. I really enjoy picking my nose. (I was tagged so I'm letting it all out, or maybe I did that on #4.)
7. Every morning my husband starts to snore as soon as I get out of bed. I think it's because he doesn't want me to ask him to make me some tea!

So there you have it! Who knows if anyone will read this anyway. I just hope my husband doesn't read it. He doesn't know any of this!

Mother's Day

I bought this beautiful watercolor today for my mother from bluedogrose on Etsy. I'm so excited because it just moves me and my mother loves horses. So I hope she loves this painting. I'm not even into horses but I really love this painting! I found it on a beautiful treasury made by cindyg called GREYBLUEGREEN(ISH). Check out the necklace I made this weekend for my husband. I think it turned out great! A freind of mine asked me to make a necklace for her boyfriend, who doesn't usually wear jewelry, and my husband liked it a lot. So I made him one with similar beads. But since I started making make Vegas Lights series he's wanted me to do a piece of leather in the shape of Africa and since I was making him a necklace now was the time for Africa. So I made it. It has all kinds of cool beads like black marble, soap stone, coconut, bone, sandstone, jade, carnelian(the last three are what the scarabs are.) He loves it and feels proud to wear it!

Recently I decided to ask my co-worker who purchased this necklace if I could take it back to photograph it.
When I made this necklace I didn't have a digital camera yet, or a computer for that matter. It's one I really liked and I'm glad I got a chance to add it to my portfolio. And i'm posting it 'cause I wanted to share it with y'all too. this necklace has all kinds of goodies on it like pearls and vintage crystals, jade and Bali silver spacers. My favorite part is the wire work I did with coral branches around the cinnabar fish. I happy now that I can treasure it forever!

If i had to pick a favorite that is currently in the plus size treasury on Etsy I'd have to pick the Fire Lillies Tee.
I like the brown and the placement of the silkscreen seems like it might be flattering.

The assemblage of a plus size street team is very exciting, although I would really love to see the clothes designers on Etsy get serious about plus size clothing. It's definately a market waiting to be tapped into and thickgurlz like to wear more than just t-shirts. i'm not knocking the designers. There's some cute stuff on Etsy. It's just that as a thickgurl I would love to wear some things that are tailored and stylish and not just stretchy.

So after a few days of painstakingly tweaking, redesigning and trying to have some style while adhering to the parameters of blogger, my husband has me back on track with my blog. "Phew!"

On to American Idol. I always have to give props to my fellow thickgurl LaKisha Jones. I must say that this was the first week I really didn't care for the top she was wearing, but I did like the jeans. They've been dressing her in some fly clothes and I looked at the Idol website and they only show you like things and where you can get them, instead of telling you where the actual clothes she wears come from. "Phooey!"

And when Ryan offered her a seat and politely declined well...us thickgurls have all been there before.

I just want to say did you notice that the brown people were the ones who made through rock night. I think people and the contestants had their doubts, but they pulled through. It's not like rock and roll isn't their music. It surely didn't start with Elvis.

Anyway thickgurl props to LaKisha and to my favorite and the very best contestant on American Idol, Melinda Doolittle.

These are the latest retro lucite earrings I've made with the new lucite beads I got from array, on Etsy of course. They're very retro and sassy! I love the bright reds of the latter days, they're so vibrant. I haven't listed them yet.

So you're getting a cool preview. My husband is telling me to take a break from making earrings, so I made a bunch of bracelets too, but for some reason it's just not as satisfying, don't know why. I'm just on an earring kick right now. Anyway, let me know what you think of them.

Lakisha Jones is one of the best performers on American Idol and she is definately representing plus-size girls everywhere! It's not very often that you see a big girl, who is pretty, who can sing, and who can wear those beautiful dresses they're putting her in and pull it of with style and confidence. Granted there have been others; Patty LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, Queen Latifah, to name a few. And I'm sure they all get flack for having big tits and big asses and big tummies. And which top designers actually design elegant, stylish, modern, etc. styles for Rubinesque women? All these women have something in common-CONFIDENCE!!! They handle their shit and they do it with grace and style despite the unforgiving public. Little do those critics know what a large number of men are extremely attracted to large women. I'm lucky I got mine!

Girls, all y'all need to watch this even the skinny girls (and in some cases, especially the skinny girls!) This woman is right on the money with her analysis of plus-size women. Though, in most cases, I have been a confident plus-size girl, this video makes such good points and it brings to light the mentality that we as plus-size women impose on ourselves. Society and the media are contributors, but we need to take responsibility for our own attitudes about ourselves, the people around us, and the people with whom we choose to socialize.
There are more and more venues available to THICK women and we are a market that is just waiting to be tapped into. I believe it will come soon, because more and more of us are plus-size now than ever before. We still need to be healthy though. It's still detrimental to be very overweight and eating healthy and maintaining some sort of regular activity are key to us plus-size ladies being healthy and being HEALTHY.

Ladies, these "Ladies" are absolutely amazing! It says a lot about other societies that they can accept such diversity as to have a transgender/transsexual beauty contest. And believe me girls these ladies give us quite a run for our money! Most people have quite a challenge finding any flaws in these femmes. We could definately learn more than a thing or two from them about the way we carry ourselves and knowing what men want and want to see in a woman.
